Summary: Virginia Untold: The African American Narrative is a digital project from the Library of Virginia that provides access to government records documenting the lived experiences of enslaved and free Black and Multiracial people in the Library's collections. Virginia's unique legal and social history exemplifies the tension between those in power, most often white men, and Black and Multiracial men and women. Through the work of Virginia Untold, the Library recognizes its responsibility to surfacing these narratives through digitization, indexing, and education. Virginia Untold Project Manager Lydia Neuroth will share about the origins of this project, the funding streams that support it, as well as the effects this project continues to have in connecting genealogists, scholars, and students with unique stories of Black Virginians.

Our Speaker: Lydia Neuroth, Manager of the Virginia Untold project, is an archives professional committed to engaging marginalized communities to collect, preserve, and share a more inclusive story of American history. She is an MLS grad (UNC '20 and UVa '14) with an archival research background. Her experience includes conducting documentary research, archival preservation, library instruction, and public history.
